さて前回少し触れましたが、スピーチを最初から
最後まで覚えることで話し方や書き方の構成、
ロジックが学べます。
オバマ大統領の演説などは、Emotional Appeal
（観衆の心に訴える）のありとあらゆるテクニックが
使われていますが、実はその裏にはしっかりとした
ロジカルな全体構成の巧みさがあります。
英語ロジックの基本に沿っていて教科書的というか、
誰にでもとても分かりやすく構成されています。
ロジック構成として、考察してみると例外的に
面白いのが、前回ご紹介したリンカーンの
ゲティズバーグ演説です。
まずリンカーンの署名がしてあった全文は以下のように
3段落で書かれていたようです。
Four score and seven years ago our fathers
brought forth on this continent, a new nation,
conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war,
testing whether that nation, or any nation
so conceived and so dedicated, can long
endure. *We are met on a great battle-field
of that war. We have come to dedicate a
portion of that field, as a final resting place
for those who here gave their lives that
that nation might live. It is altogether fitting
and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -
we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -
this ground. The brave men, living and dead,
who struggled here, have consecrated it, far
above our poor power to add or detract.
The world will little note, nor long remember
what we say here, but it can never forget
what they did here. **It is for us the living,
rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished
work which they who fought here have thus far
so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be
here dedicated to the great task remaining
before us -- that from these honored dead
we take increased devotion to that cause
for which they gave the last full measure of
devotion -- that we here highly resolve that
these dead shall not have died in vain --
that this nation, under God, shall have
a new birth of freedom -- and that government
of the people, by the people, for the people,
shall not perish from the earth.
3段落というと、教科書的には序文、本論、
結論となるところです。しかしこの演説は
2段落目と3段落目が、本論と結論の関係には
ないように思えます。一見しただけでも、
本論が短く結論が逆にとても長い、
アンバランスな構成です。
この演説を記述している出版物の中には、
この全文を4段落や5段落に分けて記載
しているものも多くあるようです。
上記文中３段落目の**It is for us the living で
段落を分けるのが４段落表記、さらに２段落目
*We are met on...で段落を区切ると５段落表記
となります。
段落構成は英語ロジック構成と直結していて
英作文をする上で一番大切な部分です。
区切り方ひとつで、伝えたい内容まで変わりえる
くらい繊細な部分です。
なぜ、４段落や５段落に表記が変えられているのか、
は別問題として、個人的に興味を感じたのは
４段落バージョンです。
それは、このスピーチ構成はとても例外的ですが、
日本語の思考表現法である「起承転結」になって
いることが分かるからです。
Four score and seven years agoで「起」が始まり、
「承｝はNow we are engaged in a great civil war,
「転」はBut, in a larger sense, we can not...
そして「結」はIt is for us the living以降から最後まで
と「起承転結」の流れと見事にフィットします！
リンカーンご本人は、勿論こんなことは意識しては
いなかったでしょうが、面白いですね。
実は「起承転結」という思考方法は、日本語独自のもの
であり、他言語で用いると大変分かりにくいものだ
とされています。
私も同感ではありますが、ゲティズバーグ演説は、
例外的にメッセージが大変強く伝わってきます。
ですから、もし皆さんが「起承転結」の構成を
外国の方に説明するチャンスがある時は、
この演説を例にとられると、よく理解して
もらえるかもしれませんね。
