今日はカプラン受講生の皆さまには、ぜひ今から準備して欲しい気持ちを込めてのご案内です。来年正月早々に開催される暗誦大会のテキストが決定しました。新しい年に向けて、新年の新たな英語学習にかける思いも込めて、ぜひ当日まで熱く練習してみてください。もちろんカプラン受講生以外の方にも、この部分の暗誦は強くお薦めします。
テキストは今や伝説となった、そして皆さんも良く知っている、２００４年のオバマ（当時イリノイ州議員）による基調演説からです。ジョンケリー民主党大統領候補の応援演説でしたが、当時の主張がそのままオバマ自身の大統領としての方針として続いています。
多くの日本人がオバマ大統領のスピーチを賞賛したのは、その内容に共感したことが多かったと思います。私見としては、特に「他人を思いやる心」など日本人の道徳観に深く共通したこともあるのではと考えています。
この部分のスピーチでは、個人主義というのは思いやりの心なしには成立しないと、オバマ流に具体的に述べていて、私の好きな１節でもあります。

If there is a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child.

If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties.
It is that fundamental belief -- It is that fundamental belief: I am my brother's keeper. I am my sister's keeper that makes this country work.
It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams and yet still come together as one American family. E pluribus unum: "Out of many, one."
