Hello again everyone.
I hope some of you are reading this! Last time, I gave a brief self-introduction. This time I want to give you some more information about what I enjoy doing in my spare time and why it can help you. I read a lot (what's life without books, eh?); do a bit of creative writing; play the piano; watch sport occasionally; drink too much; spend time with my family; eat at "all-you-can-eat" restaurants and then get stomach ache; waste time on the Internet etc etc etc. However, I have one hobby which may interest you guys- I actually enjoy studying Japanese. When I first came to Japan nine years ago, I couldn't speak much and I found the language really difficult to study: kanji was crazy; I didn't know the difference between 'ga', 'wa' and 'ni'; all people spoke too fast; the amount of vocabulary was endless. I was at a loss but I never gave up.

Enjoy Studying
I am still not satisfied with my level but I have picked up some techniques which help me enjoy studying. This is where I can maybe be of help to some of you. If you think studying English is boring or troublesome, you need to change your mindset. The more you learn English, the more the fun you can have. You can begin to understand all of what native speakers are saying to you. You can comprehend written English passages in less time. You can follow the dialogue of a movie without using the subtitles too much. You can express your ideas and opinions quickly and interestingly. Think of how satisfying all this can be!


Make Mistakes!
In studying Japanese, I also realized it is better not to care about making mistakes. By making mistakes, we can learn and improve in a language. Who cares if you make a mistake? If you make a mistake, we can correct you and you can learn not to make the same error again. It's simple!


Speak Out
In class, don't be shy to speak out or raise a hand if you don't understand anything. Kaplan teachers want to hear your thoughts and ideas. We want you to ask us to explain the meaning of the grammar pattern, the difficult vocabulary or the context of the passage. These kinds of questions make us better as teachers. You should use us in class!


Mix It Up
Also, when you are self-studying, English can seem very tiresome. My advice is that you should mix it up a bit. By this I mean, don't spend too long on one exercise. You should spend 20 minutes reading something, then 20 minutes listening to something totally different, then practice some writing or grammar, then watch or read something else. If you mix it up like this, you won't get so bored and your brain won't get so tired.


Always Review
One more thing: it's important to review. If you study a lot of English, you will pick up a huge amount of vocabulary, expressions, idioms and grammatical structures. You must review these or you will forget them very quickly. When you self-study after a class, you should review what you learnt to refresh your memory. It is very difficult to remember new words or expressions in English but if you review, you can become familiar with it all.


In short, the important point is to realize that English can be fun!

また、各担当講師がそれぞれ持っているバックグラウンドなどの魅力を
最大限に活かすようカリキュラムされたクラスでもありますので
クラスの形式は担当講師により様々です。

I'll never forget the time when my sister encountered her first bad professor in university. She went university after I did, so at the time I must have had already been in university for about three years. We were living in different cities going to different universities and she called me up to relay the utter shock and disgust she felt with having had received this less than par instructor. After she got it out of her system I pretty much laughed in her face, not literally, we were on the phone. And I told her that in my three years I had only had about two or three good instructors, two or three out of what must have been more than 20. I told her that a good instructor is a blessing, not a requirement and that she was extremely lucky to have had had so many good professors so far.


Generally in life, I think it is a very wise thing to take responsibility for the things you can actually do something about. And for things that are out of your control, you should use the things you CAN control (your perspective, your attitude, your own effort and resources) to make the best of them. To simply sit back and complain about things one has no control over will make one into a very unhappy and bitter person. There's a pretty famous quote in English that says, "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it." Sure it's harder to take responsibility for things, because then it something sucks, it sucks because you haven't made it better. And no one wants to admit that. Everyone wants to point fingers. But I want to say that pointing fingers will not get you anywhere. Pointing fingers will make your life miserable because life is normally not naturally very pleasant and perfect. Life is what you make it.


In regards to test prep or education in general, the quality of your teacher is one of those things that is out of your control. As far as I can tell, it seems to me that the Japanese education system doesn't put much of the education responsibility on the students. Sure the students are responsible for listening to the teacher and doing their homework and studying, but this level of participation will not take you as far as it is possible for you to go. In my experience in America, I was completely responsible for understanding any of the material which was taught to me. If I didn't understand, I needed to raise my hand and ask a question or talk to the teacher after class or do extra research on my own through other books or the internet. Because if I didn't, I could say all I wanted that my teacher was bad, but at the end of the day it was my grade that sucked. And when I would later find myself in a situation that required high grades, I couldn't at that point say, "Oh that one wasn't my fault. I had a bad teacher for that class." The same goes for test prep. At the end of the day is if your score isn't high enough, it will be on you.


Now at Kaplan the instructors are actually pretty good. I could tell you horror stories about teacher's I've had before. But I want to say that if you have a habit of expecting teachers to cater to you, or if you've never experienced really pursuing and seeking knowledge on your own, you might consider changing your approach to education. It might take more work, but in the end you will be more capable and successful and in grasp of the knowledge you've been seeking.

はじめまして。板倉純子と申します。
人道支援組織ジャパン･プラットフォームから５番目の登場で、今回が初登場です。
椎名さんや勝部さんと同じく事業部に所属しております。



私は、文章を書くということが得意でないので、皆さんが求めているようなブログが書けるかどうか、愉しんでいただけるか不安ではありますが、宜しくお願いします。
さて、第一回目の今日は、自己紹介を含めて「何が転機」で'今'この分野に身をおいているのかについて振り返る機会としてお話したいと思います。
私は、自己紹介で書いたとおり、大学では建築を専攻しておりました。日々、建物の模型を作ったり、図面を書いたり、環境や防災、設備や構造まで、それに建築史という歴史まで学ぶ機会を得ました。


そう、あれはきっと4年になる前の春休みかな、当時はフィンランドから留学生が来ていてその関係で久々に製図室を訪れたときのことです。お世辞でも綺麗とはいえない４階の製図室の片隅で、スチレンボードで模型を作っている人物が・・・・
友達に聞いたら、そのひたすら作業をする人は隣の研究室のM1らしい。　
早速、話を聞いてみると、「アフリカのジブチ共和国で現地の高校生と協力して、現地の在来工法を用いた小学校を作る計画」とか。


説明すると、ジブチというアフリカの角と呼ばれている場所にある国(最近ではその近辺で海賊が出て、海上自衛隊も出動するとか言っていて騒がれている場所)で、その国唯一の高等教育機関：商業工業高校Lycee industriel & commercial (当時、その国には大学がなかったのです！)　において、ジブチが抱える学校施設不足問題の解決、容易に経済的な建物を建設することをテーマとして、学生にワークショップを通して地元に伝わる技術を説明し理解して、共同で実験棟を建てるものでした。(日干し煉瓦の作成、その強度実験、建築家とのワークショップ、ノマドの調査、現地での共同作業、ホーム・スティ・・・・)


今まで聴いたことのない地名、コンセプト、その先輩の話に惹かれて、その場で「私も行きたい！」って伝えました。
恐らく、私が記憶する中でこれが、この分野の最初の一歩「この時、私の中の世界が動いた」のだと思います。（皆さんにはこの時点では、何がなんだかわからないと思いますが・・・・）


そしたら、次に何を考えないといけないかというと「予防接種」です。
・ 黄熱病・狂犬病・破傷風・肝炎（A/B）など
それと、渡航に掛かる予算確保と家族への報告。
予算は、もともと卒論のテーマを「チュニジア・イスラームの集落における住まい方」に決めていたので、春休みに調査の下見に行こうと思っていた費用にと、冬休みのバイト（都市コンサルの都内の空地に関する調査の手伝いだったかな）で貯めた費用を当てることで対応し、家族への報告は慎重に行いました。
すでに出発まで１週間くらいしか残ってなかったのです。もう毎日のようにプロジェクトに関係することで動いていて、打ち合わせに参加したり、資料探しと航空券の予約・・・・。
その当時、ジブチに関する資料なんて皆無に近くて、JICAもいないし、日本大使館なんてない。
とにかく何も情報がないまま、向かうことになるのでした。


意味通じましたか？　
このまま書いていても、書きたいことが通じるか不安なので、今日はここまで。
次回、ジブチへの出発するところから書きます。まだまだ、一筋縄ではいかない、大変な旅なのでした。
