In English class for adults, the atmosphere is quite different from that for youth.
It was energetic class as youth class, but the scent of "seriousness" was in the air.
Some of them were studying English to have better job opportunities in the future. Others were waiting for news to allow them to resettle in the third counties such as USA. Iraqi temporary guests need to fulfill some requirements for having jobs in Jordan, and the windows of opportunities of resettlement in the third countries for Iraqi refugees are very limited. However, they still keep hopes for the future and keep studying.
That informal education (the education outside of a standard school setting) has also another purpose. Many Iraqi refugees lost their reasons to be with their jobs when they left their place of origin. I heard the opinion that the lost of job could be the lost of their purpose for living and the pride in their families in their traditional culture. I am afraid to hear that we have some reports saying we have increase of domestic violence in their life as refugees partly because of the frustration caused by such situations. In that context, the opportunity for studying English could help easing frustration among students and support stabilizing their state of mind.
About 6 years have passed since many Iraqi people had to leave their homes and became refugees without having certain vision for the future. Many Iraqi refugees I met were very kind and talented to have good occupations in their home country. I imagine the life as refugees and what I would do if I were one of them. It could be beyond my imagination, but even if it were, I keep trying anyway and think what we can do together not as a provider but a partner.
