Hi everyoneI got into films when I was a University student a long, long time ago. Before that I could never concentrate for long enough to sit through one whole movie. However, when I reached the age of 18 or 19 I vowed to watch as many films as possible so that I could sound intelligent and knowledgeable when I spoke to women!
These days, I don't have the time to watch many movies- maybe only about three or four a year so when I choose one to watch, I make sure it is critically acclaimed. I am also very picky about films. I hate any film which has bad acting, a dumbed-down plot or unnatural dialogue. That rules out pretty much most Hollywood movies then.
Let me recommend some of my favourite directors in the English language. You can watch their films to improve your English even if you don't like them! I like most films by Ken Loach, Mike Leigh and Woody Allen.
Ken Loach is a British director who makes movies with a political message. I especially recommend "My Name is Joe" and "Land and Freedom". Both are a little depressing but great stories.
Mike Leigh writes and directs mostly comedy dramas. He is famous for using ad-lib style in his films and this means that the dialogue and acting are often incredibly realistic. I recommend "Happy-Go-Lucky" and "Secrets and Lies" by him. You can really enjoy the London accent in these films!
Woody Allen is, of course, famous for his comedies. His films are often hit-and-miss but when they are good, they are really good. I really like "Annie Hall" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors" by him.
Most of these films can be found at your local Tsutaya, if you're interested. Just don't blame me if you don't like them! Taste in movies is always subjective, so feel free to tell me what you like anytime.
Bye for now!
