How do you try to make your class rewarding to students?
I try to make the class enjoyable and have my students learn about some interesting topics while using English.

Comment to students:
Don't forget to take breaks! The mind naturally wanders. We are not machines. Allow for this during your study time, and get a good night's sleep. A lot of our progress actually occurs while we're asleep, when the brain is sifting through memories of the day's activities, accommodating and hard-wiring repeated activities into our internal circuitry.

Being a kid can be magical. So much fun to be had. Places to explore, new bicycles to ride. Games to play and amusement parks to visit. And in our house, the most magical of all: the yearly summer vacation !

My dad loved his kids. He often looked at us to make sure we were having fun. He always had a ready smile and loved to hug us.There were four of us kids, so my mom and dad had their hands full !

But every summer we set off to explore the United States.
America is a big country, so that meant stuffing our hand puppets and games into the car, placing the suitcases on the roofrack, and driving 9-10 hours a day through corn fields and sometimes monotonous scenery. Cars had no cruise control or air conditioners in those days. We just rolled down the windows and let the hot highway air come racing in. So you can imagine our excitement when at last, we saw the motel sign and swimming pool waiting for us !

On one vacation, after 3 or so days of traveling from New York State, our gruelling trek led us to... the Rocky Mountains. Even from a distance we could see the magnificence of these mountains. Hours passed, but the mountains hardly got bigger as we approached them. In such natural areas, the vast distances deceive.

If it weren't enough just to see the majestic peaks from our car, we would soon be riding horses and hiking in them, breathing in the natural pine, fir and spruce tree smells. And I can still hear the sounds of trickling streams, birds, and whispering winds curving through the forest.

There are too many great memories to include here, and too many thanks to say to my father. So I'll just end this blog with these humble words: "Thanks, Dad !"

I've always been a "desktop" computer kind of guy. I've never wanted to carry a heavy notebook around, and I like to build my own computers so I can upgrade them as needed. Things change, though, and I need a computer for business when I travel, so I decided to buy a "netbook". It was amazingly inexpensive, but well-made and reasonably fast; it's also well-equipped to do everything you'd want in a small, mobile package. No DVD drive, but with my home wireless network I can use the one on my desktop if I need it.

For those who don't have a lightweight computer, but want to utilize their Kaplan online resources away from home, this is a great, affordable option. Wifi is available at lots of coffee shops and fast food restaurants for a reasonable monthly fee, and if you like to travel it's a great way to keep in touch.

ジャパン・プラットフォームの椎名と申します。プログラム・コーディネーターとしてイラクやヨルダンでのプログラムなどを担当しております。これまでは拙い英語で書かせていただいておりましたが、今回は日本語で失礼いたします。


このブログを読んでいる皆様の中には、海外のテレビドラマを鑑賞しながら英語を勉強している方も多いと思います。代表的なのは、「24」、「HEROS」、「LOST」、「Desperate Housewives」...まだまだありますね。私も海外ドラマを鑑賞するのが好きで、機会があれば見ています。
ハラハラするストーリーや気になる出演者たちなど、見る人をひきつける要素が満載なのは嬉しいですが、時に英語学習であることを忘れてついつい先へ先へと見すぎてしまうのが、私にとって玉に傷です。ストーリーは覚えていても、重要なフレーズが頭に残っていないことも。。。


そんな説得力のない私がお勧めするのも変ですが、私が一番好きでお勧めしたいのが「The West Wing」というドラマです。少し古いですが、シーズン7まであります。いわゆるホワイト・ハウスものです。
出演者がみんな個性的でチャーミングなのは当たり前なのですが、私が特にお勧めするのは、彼らの会話、仕事の仕方が勉強になるからです。



ドラマの主要人物たちは、アメリカ大統領を中心にその身近なスタッフや大統領の家族なのですが、まず私が気にするのが、そのスタッフが大統領に話しかける方法。目上の人にどのように発言し、どのように尊敬を表しつつ反論しているか、自分の主張を説明し、説得させるのか。私の仕事では支援現場で現地政府の偉い方々などに英語でお話をうかがうことが多いので、大変参考になります。私はいかに相手に気持ちよく話していただきつつ、適度に刺激のある質問をして会話を盛り上げ、必要な情報を収集するかについて気を使うので、勉強になります。



そして、ドラマの中でのスタッフ同士のコミュニケーションのとり方。同僚や部下とどのように情報を共有し、どのようなシチュエーションで、どのように話を切り出すのか。からかったり、時には喧嘩のように議論し、主張をぶつけながら仕事をする彼らを、私は「いいな～。」と思ってしまいます。もちろんドラマでの話ですから、実際にはそんなに簡単に出来るとは思いませんが、それでも違う考え方をぶつけ合って何か良いアイデアを導き出していくという仕事の仕方にうらやましいものを感じてしまいます。同じ国際支援現場で働く人々と、現場で意見をぶつけあって、良いものを作り上げようとする中で、私はどのようにすれば相手と良い関係を保ちながら、議論をぶつけるかについて考えることがあります。またその中でどのような考え方、行動を自分の中心にすえて仕事をするのかについても。



頭の切れるドラマの人物たちが、味のある会話をしつつ、時に激しく、時に静かに物事を考え、行動しているかを見ていると、私の心の中で、「自分もいい仕事をしたい。」という気持ちが湧き上がってくるのを感じます。今取り組んでいる仕事に対していまひとつ気持ちを込められないとき、同じ物事を違った見方で見て問題を突破したいとき、そして様々な問題につぶされてしまうように感じたときに私はこのドラマを何度も見返して気持ちを作り、新たにしています。ドラマの内容や話されている事柄について、「事実に反する」といった意見もあるようですが、このドラマは私の活力剤です。


スマートに同僚にお願い事をしたいとき、「～, will you?」と言えるかどうか。相手を見て発言をするとき、「With all due respect, sir,～」と会話を切り出せるか。苦しい局面でまた新たな問題が発生したとき、「Bring it on!」と言えるかどうか。言いたいことだけを一方的に言って終わる英語ではなく、相手とのコミュニケーションを楽しみながら話す英語にシフトしたい時、そして英語で戦い、英語で自分の気持ちを盛り上げ、英語で何かを成し遂げたいとき、このドラマを見ることを私はお勧めします。


ちなみに私の好きな登場人物はJoshua "Josh" Lyman（Deputy Chief of Staff）です。
