今日は講師・Anthony先生が更新! TOEFL受験の前にマックで腹ごしらえする石渡代表! 受験の前のマックはやめたほうがいいかもしれません(笑) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In recent weeks I wrote in this blog about terrible English food and movies I like. In today's blog, I want to combine both! I recently saw the documentary film "Supersize Me'. Have you seen it? The director Morgan Spurlock decides to go on a McDonald's-only diet for one month just to see how unhealthy such food is. He ends up not just putting on a lot of weight but suffering from depression, shortness of breath, liver and heart problems.
How often do you eat fast food? Sometimes I really feel an urge to eat some. Ironically, while I was watching the movie, I really wanted to go and get a Big Mac! To be honest though, these days I rarely, if ever, eat such food anymore. The last time I went to McDonald's, I was disappointed with the burger and I really hated the garish lighting. It is far too bright in those shops.
It is not just the health issue that prevents me from eating such fast food. I am also very suspicious of the power and wealth of such huge global corporations such as McDonalds. Such companies have influential lobby groups in Washington that help make sure they can maintain their profitable status. This is nothing new of course- just Capitalism in action- but it can leave a sour taste in the mouth.
Obesity is an "epidemic" problem in the US and UK now. Young people are especially prone to such problems. I don't just blame the fast food corporations for such a situation. I think there has to be personal and parental responsibility as well. When I was a kid, I ate bad food but I had a lot of exercise. These days a lot of kids in the UK barely leave their room (especially if there is a TV or a Playstation there).
So who do we blame for child obesity? The food giants? The parents? The children themselves? Sony? The TV industry? Or all of the above? All I know is that if I can one day move into a bigger house or apartment, I will make sure that the living room and bedrooms do not have a TV... maybe...
