The "blog."
"Blog" is a relatively new English word. Before the 1990's,the word "blog" had no meaning. But as of December 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more
than 112 million blogs. A "blog," is a contraction of the term "weblog," and is any kind of diary published on the World-Wide Web, usually written by an individual ( like
Kaplan instructors ), or by corporate bodies ( like Kaplan ).

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketches (sketchblog), videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), and audio (podcasting). Micro-blogging is another type of blogging, featuring very short posts.

Popularity.
In August 2006, Technorati found that the most linked-to blog on the internet was that of Chinese actress Xu Jinglei. Chinese media Xinhua reported that this blog received more than 50 million page views, claiming it to be the most popular blog in the world. Technorati rated Boing Boing to be the most-read group-written blog.

Legal and social consequences.
Blogging can result in a range of legal liabilities and other unforeseen consequences. Several cases have been brought before the national courts against bloggers concerning issues of defamation or liability. The courts have returned with mixed verdicts. Internet Service Providers (ISPs), in general, are immune from liability for information that originates with third parties.

Political Dangers.
Blogging can sometimes have unforeseen consequences in politically sensitive areas. Blogs are much harder to control than broadcast or even print media. As a result, totalitarian and authoritarian regimes often seek to suppress blogs and/or to punish those who maintain them. In Myanmar, Nay Phone Latt, a blogger, was sentenced to 20 years in jail for posting a cartoon critical of head of state Than Shwe.

Today I was preparing for a class discussion, and the topic was "In Japan, It's Raining Tadpoles". Pretty strange, but it was also interesting because we can use it to encourage all sorts of discussions and learn new vocabulary. A wider range of discussion topics keeps thing interesting, not only for the students, but for the teachers as well!


When preparing for tests like the TOEFL, it's a good idea to read a wide range of material on your own. Not only is this more interesting, you'll be able to practice our methods and pick up the rhythm and structures of English faster. You should read things that interest you, not just "difficult" or academic writing. This is a key to improving your overall command of English.

今回は、仕事の話はやめて　スーダンで再会を果たした友人のこと、その友人の言葉についてお話します。

友人の名は、トーマス。　
南部スーダン、東エクアトリア州トリット出身。タルーカ族。（長身の痩せ型）
両親は、内戦により失い、彼は命からがら兄弟数人と首都ハルツームへ逃げてきました。その時負った左上腕部の傷が痛々しく、こっそり見せてくれました。銃で撃たれたのです。あとは、安宿で住み込みの掃除のアルバイトをしながら、ジュバ大学に通っていた。ここまでが、これまでに私に話してくれた内容です。

大学卒業後は、ユニセフなどで働いていましたが、ナショナルスタッフは半年毎の契約で、不安定でした。
しかし、南部スーダン政府が樹立により、ジュバ(南部スーダンの首都)へ戻り、この日を待ち望んでいた国づくりのために経済産業省の役人となった。その間に、大学で知り合った女性(女医)と結婚しました。１年前には男の子が生まれ、コニョコニョマーケット（コニョコニョ市場といい、ジュバでは誰でも知っている場所）の近くに家を借りて、家族みんなで住んでいました。

私は、２００２年にスーダンを離れて以降は、なにかと忙しく、連絡は取っていなかったのですが、時々彼から様子を伝えるメールが届いていました。
今回のスーダン出張前も時間が無く、私が連絡を取ったのもスーダンへ出発した後でしたが、すぐに返事をくれました。

出張中は本当に時間が無いのですが、時間を見つけてUNHCR事務所近くの彼のオフィスまで会いに行き、久しぶりの再開に喜びました。ユーモアと優しさと流暢な英語、生真面目なところ　何も変わっていませんでした。しかし、すごく貫禄がついていたのに驚きました。私たちが出会ったときは、彼はガリガリだったから。今は、人間として、夫として父として幸せなのだろうと直ぐに彼の顔を見てわかりました。

彼の仕事はとうに終わっていたのにも関わらず、オフィスで待っていてくれて、いろいろな話をしてくれました。きっと、いつものように私がズケズケと色々聞くからだと思うけれど...。
今まで語らなかった話、家族のことや今後のことなど。それに、話題になっている公務員の給料の遅延についても聞いてみました。

彼の真実は、獣医だった父親は内戦中の流れ弾で死に、母親とは戦争中に死に別れとなっていたのです。ハルツームに来るまではSPLAの一員として政府軍と戦っていた兵士だったのです。戦っていた時に、銃撃戦で大怪我を負い、ジュバへ運ばれ治療を受けたのです。その時は、偽装し一般市民として入院し、怪我を治したそうです。そうでもしないと、政府軍に見つかれば殺されてしまうからです。九死に一生を得た彼は、兵士として戦っている場合ではない、今後の国づくりのために勉強しようと気づいたのです。これを機会に一般市民としてやり直そうと、ハルツームに行きジュバ大学（内戦中にハルツームにジュバ大学の分校が出来た。ハルツーム大学と並びスーダンで１,２を争う優秀な大学）へと進学しました。お金が無く、住み込みでアルバイトしながら学費を貯めたのです。
そんな中でも、情報収集を欠かさず、南部にいる同胞に、北部スーダンの情報を送っていたそうです。

今の生活は、大学で知り合った彼女と結婚し、子どもに恵まれたこと、新しい国づくりのために役立っていることが本当に嬉しいようでした。
しかし、言われているように公務員の給料の遅配（満額がいつも払われない）があり、気持ちの上で、将来への不安も見えました。
既にCPAが署名されて３年がたっても、社会や生活が好転しないことへの不安があり、このままの状態が続くようであれば、移民したいと口にしました。そして、「でも、情況が好転したらまた戻って来たいけれど．．．」と。
彼は、更によりよい生活を求めるため、安全で公平な社会をもとめ、また高い教育を更に受けたいという希望があり、奥さんの兄がいるオーストラリアへ移民したいとはっきりと口にしたのです。また、彼の中には、大学で教育を受けたという自信と誇りがあり、他の国でもやっていけるという自信があったことの裏づけだったのかもしれません。

私は、これを聞いて複雑な気持ちになりました。
これからが、自分達の国づくりが本格化するというときに、その国を出たいという人がいる。それも、これまで「この瞬間」を待ちわびていた人が、そう言ったのです。スーダンにて、高等教育を受けて、そして育った人が今後の南部スーダンの未来を担う人から、国を出るということを聞いたのが、ショックだったのです。
そして、国づくりの一助になればと、遠い日本から赴き、支援をしているNGOがそこにはいるのです。
誰もが　よりよい生活を求めることは、当然のことです。
しかし、自分達の国を自らが造らなくて、誰が造るのでしょう。

今回の出張は、いろいろと考えさせられる機会となりました。

Do you want to improve your reading but hate self-studying? I have some tips for you. The most important thing is to read something that interests you.

If you like news, there are many websites which provide useful information in short, easy English. I recommend the BBC, Japan Times or Asahi websites which all write articles in really, really short paragraphs.


If you want gossip, you can find short, sharp entertainment news at the Yahoo websites.


If you want to study about history, science or anything else in English then you should use the Wikipedia website. Did you know that they have many articles in "Simple English"? You can scroll down the languages tab on the left of any article and if they have a "Simple English" button, you should click on that and you can then read the article in English which is designed for young native-speakers or ESL learners. I really strongly recommend this.

If you like fiction, have you tried the Penguin Reader series of books? These are shortened versions of famous novels with comprehension questions in them. I think they are very good because they still keep the essence of the original novel despite being much shorter and a little simpler.

Reading is not just important for your reading skill. You can also improve your grammar by regularly seeing how sentences are structured and you can build your vocabulary. What's more, you can learn so much more about life and the world around you- as well as a foreign language. You can kill two birds with one stone!

You can become a more interesting, educated person through reading, but I have one warning: please remember that reading is no substitute for real life. That is where all the best experiences are.
