朝日新聞2009年8月15日朝刊で、世界最高齢の小学生だったケニアのキマニ・マルゲさんが胃がんで亡くなった記事を見付けました。

マルゲさんは独立を目指す武装組織の戦士として育ち、貧しさもあって教育を受けられませんでした。 世界各地には現在でも、学校に行けない、文字の読み書きができない人たちがまだまだいます。 例えばアフガニスタンでは数年前まで女の子が学校に通うことすらできませんでしたよね。 現場では自分の名前を書くことさえできない人と会うことだってあります。

マルゲさんは84歳だった2004年にケニア政府の初等教育無料化を知り、1年生として小学校に入学しました。（「世界最高齢の小学校入学」としてギネスブック認定！）
以来、勉強してお金の計算や聖書を読めるようになりたいと目標を持って小学校に通っていましたが、困難は降りかかってきます。
2007年末以降のケニア暴動で避難民キャンプ生活になって通学できなくなってしまいました。

しかし、マルゲさんは自分の熱意を習ったスワヒリ語に託し、ケニア赤十字に手紙を書きました。すると願いが届き、キャンプから出てナイロビの学校に転校することができたのです。マルゲさんは「死ぬまで勉強する」と喜んでいたそうです。
ケニアの地元紙によると、マルゲさんを題材にしたハリウッド映画「1年生」が撮影予定とのこと。
上映される日を楽しみにしています。

自分自身を省みて、母国語である日本語に加えてせっかく英語を勉強ができる環境にあるのだから、仕事をやりくりしてもっとカプランのワークショップにも出席しなきゃと反省しているところです。

Wanna know what hot is? Go to a desert. There are no air-conditioned trains, office buildings, or department stores. The sun's surface temperature is 6000 degrees C. Now that's hot !

Fortunately, the sun and the Earth are conveniently located so as to provide that narrow window of temperatures that supports life on our planet.

I used to play tennis for 6 hours on a hot summer afternoon under cloudless skies. Did I get hot and sweat? Unequivocally ! But I knew a cold drink and shower awaited. Besides, I was having too much fun to notice the heat. So why get upset?

By the way, sweating is important, as the evaporation of sweat from the skin surface has a cooling effect due to the latent heat of evaporation of water.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone say, "It's hot !"...I'd be rich.
I love summer. This is life. Energy is everywhere. Go to a park and see it, feel it, or join it.

Lyrics from an old Beatle's song sums it up:

"When the sun shines, they slip into the shade. And sip their lemonade."

But I want to say "thank you" to all the people who complain about the heat.
It means there will be less people in the park to get in the way of my frisbee.

A pretty common topic of discussion around Kaplan is computers. Lots of people are buying netbooks these days - everything is so cheap! I recently purchased a new "all-in-one" printer/copier/scanner/fax for far half the price I paid for a plain printer 8 years ago, and it uses half the ink (the reason for the new purchase - the old printer still worked just fine).

When I first came to Japan, hardly anybody had a PC. Most people had "word processors", and there were few computers even in big companies. Foreign software didn't work because every computer company had its own proprietary version of DOS. It was hard to get information about just about everything related to international business. Networks? The Internet? Forget about it.

What amazing changes we've seen over the last 15-20 years. I can't wait to see what things will be like in another 10!

Next week, I will take a short break on Izu-Oshima island. Have you ever been there? It's my favourite place in Japan. I always stay in an old wooden house, go to the beach or hot spring and eat fantastic seafood. I think Oshima is really untrendy among Tokyoites. I don't understand why- maybe because it's too close to Tokyo. You can get there in under two hours on a "jetfoil" boat. The beach isn't so amazing- the sand is volcanic so it is really black and unbearably hot if you step on it barefooted. The nightlife is non-existent but if you just want a good hot spring with views of Mount Fuji and the other islands or if you want good food in a relaxing atmosphere, then I really recommend going there for at least a weekend.


I have had many adventures there in the past. I had to kill a snake because it was in my host's garden and she was very worried. I also ate the most disgusting food ever there. Do you know kusaiya? It's a kind of dried fish which smells like...well, it smells like a very bad public toilet. I couldn't eat it. If someone is cooking it, I recommend leaving the house for several hours until the smell disappears. Also, don't kiss anyone who has ever eaten it- you will regret it.


Despite that, I really think Oshima is a great place to visit, but don't tell too many people. If everybody suddenly goes there, it will start to lose its charm. I love visiting places in Japan but most of them are so crowded. For example, at the well-known temples of Kyoto it is difficult to absorb the atmosphere when there are about five million other visitors. I am a big fan of Nara, though. Everything is much more spread out there so the crowds aren't so bad. If you hire a bicycle you can really enjoy sightseeing around there and go to see ancient burial mounds as well as the more famous places.
