Do you like the Olympics? I'm not such a fan but when they are on every four years I can get into it. In Britain, I think the Olympics are not so important because we don't win many medals. Last year in Beijing we got a lot of medals in cycling, but who cares about cycling? Does anyone really want to watch it on TV?
In 2012 the Olympics will be held in London. At first most Brits were happy that London's bid had been accepted but now many people are not so sure. Already the costs for hosting the games are spiraling out of control and during a time of economic recession such spending seems wasteful. To be honest, I think the money could have been better spent elsewhere. We really need to improve our train system and hospital facilities in London so why didn't they just spend the money there instead of building a lot of stadiums which won't be used much after 2012.
I get the feeling that most Tokyoites can understand my point of view because the Tokyo public was very lukewarm in its enthusiasm for Tokyo's bid for the 2016 games. It seems that most people were indifferent about it and there didn't seem much disappointment when the Tokyo bid failed. Maybe only Governor Ishihara was disappointed! Now Hiroshima and Nagasaki are planning a joint bid. I wonder what everyone thinks about that.
I just realized that I am a hypocrite. I really love watching the Football (soccer) World Cup and if England could become the host of that competition (maybe in 2018?) I would be happy for the government to waste their money on such a bid. My opinions are often contradictory, I suppose...
