My grandmother came from New Zealand, but her ancestors came from Scotland. Many Scots went to New Zealand, and also to Canada. There is a place in Canada called Nova Scotia, which means "New Scotland". My grandmother's ancestors went to Nova Scotia, and then continued moving until they reached New Zealand. Today, I am going to talk about some Scottish things.
Haggis. mmm oishi sou!
Haggis Haggis is a type of food. I have never eaten it, and I do not really want to. I will tell you what is in it, and you probably will not want to eat it either! It is a sheep's heart, liver and lungs, all mashed up and mixed with salt, oatmeal and spices, and then slowly boiled for about three hours inside a sheep's stomach. What do you think of that? Does it sound delicious?
Clan feuds A clan is a large extended family group. This comes from the time when people had more than ten children, so one family could get very big. A feud is an ongoing dispute or fight. The most famous clan feud in Scotland is between the Campbells and the McDonalds . This feud started in 1692 when the Campbells murdered a whole lot of the McDonalds while they were sleeping. Ever since that time, Campbells and McDonalds have hated each other. My ancestors were Campbells. One of my cousins in New Zealand was told that if he married a McDonald, he would be kicked out of the family - crazy! If there are any McDonalds reading this, I would like to say sorry for killing you guys while you were sleeping, let's not fight any more!
