I have often avoided the sciences in my life. There is so much information to absorb. And I don't like burying myself in books. Yet I chose a science major in my university (forestry), and took such courses as organic chemistry, agronomy, ecosystems, and horticulture.I liked plants, but not the science that went with it.
And now I'm teaching science to high school students. Although most of what I'm teaching was taught to me in my younger days, I sometimes learn facts I didn't know. For example, in addition to the moon, the sun has an effect on tides.
Computers have helped me overcome my resistance to science. My second college experience,Graphic Design, was 90% computer classes. I stressed a lot my first two weeks. But when I discovered that computers could be another tool of art, I embraced them. I even took a part-time on-campus job as a Photoshop instructor. Now I enjoy using computers for my photography website, making videos, and am thinking of producing an old song I wrote using Apple's Garage Band software.
I also believe the awesome special effects of TV documentaries and the internet have taken the boredom out of learning science. Even people with little or no interest in science can sit glued to their TVs and computers listening to the sounds of the sun, discovering there are 62,000 miles of blood vessels in the human body, and learning that cigarettes contain arsenic, formaldehyde, lead, hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, ammonia and 43 known carcinogens.
Glad I don't smoke !
